You love your dog. You pamper them, give them treats, and walk them everyday. When it comes to the household pecking order, the dog might even rank higher than some family members. Take for instance a situation that occurred in the Little Village neighborhood. According to a CBS Chicago report, a 34 year-old woman was attacked in broad daylight along South Whipple Street. The dog caused severe injuries to her arm, neck, and face. The woman was rescued and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition. No one is sure what caused the dog to attack, but it lead to local Animal Care & Control seizing the animal. Depending on the circumstances, not only could the owner lose the dog, but they could also be held accountable for the woman’s injuries in civil court.
As summarized under the Illinois Complied Statutes, 510 section 16: “If a dog or other animal, without provocation, attacks, attempts to attack, or injures any person . . . the owner of such dog or other animal is liable in civil damages . . .” This goes for all dog owners – even those who have never had an issue with their pet before.
